Direct current (DC) Micro-current Point Stimulation (MPS) is an innovative and latest modality of electro-acupunture where low-amplitude electric current is applied to certain pressure points for therapeutic purposes. DC micro-current therapies using low-amplitude DC current (80 μA to <1mA) have offered significant results in terms of reduction in chronic musculoskeletal pain. The proposed mechanism of action of MPS is that it works like human biocellular communication which regulates autonomic nervous system and offers wide therapeutic advantages. In addition, it has also been proposed that DC therapies help release endorphins by stimulating the pituitary gland. These two proposed mechanisms of MPS are sound explanation of its role in the management of pain. Recently conducted studies have reported significant (68%) pain relief immediately after the application of MPS therapy and further 35% relief in subsequent 48 hours. It shows that  MPS therapies modulate the biocellular communication or internal body processes which help reduce pain.

Micro-current therapies are being used by physicians, dentists, psychologists, physiotherapists and acupuncturists for decades. However, their use has been increased for the last three decades. Micro-current therapies are used for a large number of conditions including symptomatic head and neck pain, osteoarthritis, bursitis, synovitis, myositis, myalgia, neuralgia, decubitus ulcer, cholecystitis, hemiplegia, multiple sclerosis, phantom limb syndrome, lymphedema, cancer, scars and many other conditions. Post-operative abdominal scars produce adhesions in the abdominal tissues, resulting in chronic pain. Similarly, cesarean section (c-section) produces a scar in the lower abdomen which may cause chronic pain. In this regard, studies have reported MPS therapy as a valid micro-current therapy when applied to c-section scars in terms of reduction in chronic post-operative pain.
